AI Literacy: Your Organization's Imperative as You Conquer the Future

Written by Marci Parker | Jul 18, 2024 2:48:29 PM

Earlier, we wrote about how the “surroundings of AI” need to be readied before the technology.  In this, blog, we identify another pre-rollout investment – establishing AI literacy for your organization.

Much is written about AI and its ability to revolutionize your day-to-day operations.  The allure isn’t just hype either.  So many of us are already using the text generation capabilities to cut down the time it takes to respond to emails or other content.

With any new leap in technology, we face uncertainty, fears, and doubts about what it means for the future.  We can draw from the familiar, cybersecurity, to define how we prepare for the broad adoption of GenAI.  We’ve all received cybersecurity training enforcing how everyone is responsible for preventing security breaches.

Astrica believes incorporating AI literacy before implementing an AI strategy sets a solid foundation for successful AI integration, ensuring that the company can fully capitalize on the opportunities AI presents while minimizing associated risks.

Let’s look at some observations and stats

AI is a master of disguise

It’s not obvious anymore.  Previous generations of AI or automations were easier to identify. Now, only 30% of US adults could identify AI uses in everyday life.

Large gaps in understanding of how AI works create the risk of missing bias or wrong results.  Only 14% of front-line workers have received training to sharpen their understanding of AI.

It's easier to miss risks when you don’t recognize AI or know your role in keeping it accurate.

Key reasons why incorporating AI literacy throughout a company before implementing an AI strategy is important:

Informed Decision-Making

  • Employees with AI literacy can make better decisions regarding the adoption and implementation of AI technologies. They can understand the potential benefits and limitations, leading to more strategic choices.

 Enhanced Collaboration

  • AI literacy promotes a common understanding and language around AI, fostering better collaboration between technical and non-technical teams. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and can contribute effectively.

Ethical Considerations

  • Educating employees about AI helps in recognizing ethical issues such as bias, privacy, and transparency. This awareness is crucial in developing responsible AI applications that adhere to ethical standards and regulations.

Increased Adoption and Acceptance

  • When employees understand AI and its potential impact, they are more likely to embrace AI initiatives. This reduces resistance to change and ensures smoother implementation of AI strategies.

Skill Development

  • Providing AI education helps in upskilling the workforce, making them more adept at using AI tools and technologies. This can improve productivity and innovation within the company.

Risk Management

  • An AI-literate workforce is better equipped to identify and mitigate risks associated with AI deployment. They can foresee potential issues and address them proactively.

Competitive Advantage

  • Companies with a well-informed workforce can leverage AI more effectively, gaining a competitive edge in the market. This can lead to improved products, services, and customer experiences.

Future-Proofing

  • As AI continues to evolve, a foundation of AI literacy ensures that employees can adapt to new developments and integrate them into the company's operations seamlessly.

Improved ROI

  • Investments in AI are more likely to yield positive returns when the workforce understands how to use AI tools effectively. This ensures that AI initiatives are aligned with business goals and deliver tangible benefits.

Culture of Innovation

  • AI literacy fosters a culture of continuous learning and innovation. Employees are encouraged to explore new ideas and approaches, driving the company towards growth and success.
